New Product: Soma Hwy One Road Bar

Maybe we are just tired of making townie bars and track bars.
Maybe we just wanted to make the ideal bar our road frame customers, who for the most part aren't racers.
Whatever the reason, we've gone and made our first road drop bar.

The Hwy One has got a compact bend that's come into popularity in recent years. The shallow drop makes it more natural-feeling to ride in the drops. The bend keeps the aero levers in easy reach when compared to conventional road race bars. We think it's a great bar for those who are new to drop bars and who prefer to ride a little less aero or have smaller hands.

We are making them in black or silver. The sections to be covered with tape have a shotpeen finish, while the exposed section is shiny. The center graphic that doubles as a centering marker is of the Bixby Bridge in Big Sur, which California's Hwy 1 runs through.

Comes in 31.8mm or 26.0mm. Single groove in front. 6061 butted aluminum. Retailing around $40.

[6/2012 UPDATE: These now come in 46cm. Thanks for your feedback!]

Glad to see you guys are doing these in 26.0, as well as silver(!). Not many compact bar options for those still using quill stems.

Will these work with pinch bolt stems? What is the weight?

I love the compact bend without the ergonomic wiggle. I'm going to order one for my Slide Away.

Anon: Should work fine with 99% of non-removable faceplate stems

Plus one for 46cm. Very nice bars... but I gotta have the width.

+2 for wider bars. I'd two of a 46mm 26.0 silver!

Will they work with bar-end shifters?

Should work with bar end shifters.
We will take size 46 into consideration...if we do, what clamp size you wanna see first...31.8 or 26.0mm

26.0, 'natch!

is the width measured center to center or outside to outside?

Center to center my friend.

Is a 46 cm. 26.0 silver bar in the works and could you come up with an ETA?

Great looking bars!
Just wondering if they flare out at the ends (like a 3T Ergonova) making them narrower at the hoods than at the ends?
Thanks

Are these bars available in the UK?

We have a distributor in the UK. http://www.fine-adc.com/

How about a weight for both the 26.0 and 31.8? Looking to replace a few bars...

Hi - You mention removable face-plate stems - but will this work with something like a Nitto Technomic or Dynamic quill stem? Seems like it, based on some of the other comments, but want to make sure before ordering and having to return. Thanks!

Stan said...

It should work just fine with those stems.

PLEASE bring out a 46mm 26.0 silver version of this bar!

+100 for 46cm 26.0 silver

Stan said...

46cm x 26mm are on order. Should be getting some soon.

You said the weight was about "34kg." Did you mean "340g"? In a 38 width? Thanks.

Stan said...

No they really weigh 75 lb! JK, you're right of course.

340 g

Beware: some quill stems with wide(r) clamp are incompatible with this bar, e.g. Nitto/Specialized stem. I pretty much destroyed both while trying - the bend is too tight. If the bend was more like FSA compact bars, then there would be no problem (checked). A known good stem is Cinelli 1A and probably most others, but YMMV.

Like it wasn't enough, now I can't buy another Hwy One bar because it's unavailable in Europe in 40cm/silver. Had to buy a different bar...
